our places under the tree and, as soon as the conversation became animated or took a sud-
den turn, we'd be totally lost. What a humbling experience it is trying to learn a new lan-
guage as a grown-up!
We loved our little village, and we probably would have kept vacationing there if not for
the major change that was taking place in our lives. We now had a two-year-old daughter
and another child was on the way. There were only two older boys in Montesantini, and
that was about it. This wasn't an issue as long as one of our children was a toddler and
the other was in the womb, but we began wondering how we would deal with the lack of
playmates when the girls got older. We were already starting to take our two year old to the
nearby village of San Cosimo so that she could interact with other toddlers. San Cosimo
had about 500 inhabitants, including a bevy of young kids who were always running and
frolicking around the town.
Yet, if anyone had suggested that we move to San Cosimo, we would have certainly re-
fused. It would have felt like a betrayal. So it was much to our surprise that San Cosimo
eventually became our new home base in Italy. We really didn't see it coming.
