In-Depth Information
Many months later, I'm telling my Zurich-Disconnect story to my friend, Maurizio, as he's
driving me home from the Florence airport. He smiles and nods knowingly as I tell him my
tale of woe. After he hears me out, he explains that he was an auto insurance broker for
fifteen years before he started his transport business. He tells me what I did wrong:
“First of all, you never bring your car to the dealer. You always have it towed directly to the
repair shop. If you have a place you go all the time, you know they'll take care of you and
they don't want to lose your business. If you don't, you call around and you get a written
estimate for how long it will take them to do the repair. You also get them to give you a
loaner car which gives them incentive to turn around the job more quickly.
“Then when you try to get your money from the insurance company, they always start with
a low-ball offer. You have to respond with a letter from your lawyer threatening to take
them to court. They know that they will lose, but they figure that you'd rather not have to
spend a day in court. So, they raise the offer just enough to make it not worth your while
to sue for the difference. You can maybe squeeze just a bit more out of them, but basically
that's how it works.
“The insurance adjustor realized that you had no idea how to play the game, so you just
went to the bottom of his list. Same for the insurance company. And as for buying your
insurance online, you've got to be kidding. Ask your friends if any one of them buys his
insurance online. Maybe you think they're behind the times. No—they know better!”
