In-Depth Information
You might be thinking that promiscuous use has something to do with transporting pros-
titutes or letting teenagers use the car on hot dates. But in Italian all it means is “mixed
use”—hauling merchandise as well as transporting people. I tell her that I intend to use it
only for private purposes, i.e., people only. But I explain that I really don't care and she can
insure it either way, as long as we can just move forward and finish up.
She explains that, before we can go any further, she needs the dealer to explain why there
is a discrepancy between the documents, and to inform them as to which classification is
the correct one. My own preferences have nothing to do with anything. This is bigger than
both of us.
I call the dealer. He explains that the vehicle was born promiscuous but then the dealership
changed its status to private and, furthermore, that the change was duly registered with the
department of motor vehicles and that it is noted on the manifest. He notifies me later in the
day that he has spoken with Dialogo and advocated on my behalf, and everything is now
fine.
I wait for my acceptance email from Dialogo but nothing arrives. Time for another descent
into customer service hell. After two days I call to confirm that they have cleared up the
promiscuity issue. Someone researches the matter, and the issue has been apparently been
resolved satisfactorily. But, unfortunately, there's another problem. The clerk asks me what
I will be doing with the Volvo once I have the new car? I explain that I'm trading it in; the
dealer is buying it for a nominal sum, and I'll be leaving it with him when I pick up the
Renault. As soon as we've done the deal, the dealer will send a copy of the signed transfer
document to Dialogo so that they can cancel my insurance on the Volvo.
No, that's not good enough, the clerk explains. Yes, they will eventually need the transfer
of ownership document, but before that arrives, they will need a signed statement from the
dealer declaring in faith his intention to purchase my vehicle. Without that, they are sorry,
but there's no way they can proceed. I'm getting very close to losing my last scraps of pa-
tience at this point.
I ask the dealer to write a statement swearing on his first-born that he will be buying my car
and to fax it to Dialogo. He agrees to do so immediately. He calls me to say that the fax has
been sent and the transmission was received successfully. I wait, hoping against hope that
my policy will soon arrive, but my intuition tells me that my sufferings are far from over.
The next afternoon I call to check on the status of my application. It's still on hold; no signs
of new life. I ask what's taking so long.
