assign resources to them. Equally as important, people in the project
management role communicate the status of work products to stakeholders.
The  managing team recruits this expertise for itself and for the other
workl ows.
The major project management challenge for 3D is knowing and reporting
the current state of the imagery within each workl ow. Several people might
work simultaneously on the show master in order to deliver it according
to schedule and budget. For example, you may be doing color and depth
work  on the same shot, saving the settings on each as metadata to be
applied to the master. Titles associated with 3D post Project Management
include:
• Post Supervisor
• Post Producer
2.2.2 Techniques
A technique is a collection of related tasks and activities to fuli ll one or more
objectives. The managing team proposes and implements techniques for the
managing workl ow and for all other workl ows in a 3D show. On some
shows there may be dozens of separate techniques required to get from
RAW to i nal imagery. Techniques can address any of six process areas we
introduced in Chapter 1: input/output, calibration, monitoring/reviewing,
correction/grading, analysis and quality control.
One of the most important responsibilities of the managing team is to
correctly sequence workl ows for each shot or sequence in the post process.
It would be misleading to assume that the same sequence of workl ows
happens for every shot. In practice, shots require treatment in different
workl ows in different orders. For example, a team on a show requiring
a show-wide geometry correction would be wise to i x this issue prior to
depth, color or even editorial. In practice, some imagery moves rapidly
through workl ows only once while other imagery requires two or more
round trips through workl ows. This makes the task of coordinating all of
the workl ows in 3D  post somewhat more complex than 2D post because
each shot can travel through more workl ows at different rates or for a
different number of iterations. Again, the way you sequence techniques in
workl ows depends on the size and scope of your show and the kind of
production it is.
