In-Depth Information
The new role here compared to 2D postproduction is, of course, stereography.
Each of the other roles also has signii cant differences from their 2D
counterparts. The point is to make sure your team has all of these roles
covered or assigned or delegated and that no one person is burdened by
too many roles in one or more workl ows.
“Depending on the size and budget of the show, sometimes I'm the
guy with the laser pointer telling other people what to i x. Other times
I'm the person on the box doing the alignment, color and i nishing.
Sometimes I work with people to advise them how to make the most
of their post, starting with  on-set capture. I have also supervised
conversions for the various stereo houses. In the case of shooting 2D
for conversion to 3D, I will work with the DP and Director to discuss
which 2D techniques lend themselves best to conversion in terms of
camera moves, blocking, angles and lenses.”

2.2.1.1 Stereography
Stereography is the art and science of 3D. The person in the stereography
role serves in 3D post as the “3D eyes” of your show. Nearly everyone
with two eyes can perceive 3D. But very few can view 3D footage, identify
and prioritize issues, and recommend options to resolve them. Sometimes
these team members have experience and expertise in shows similar to the
one you are currently posting, but more often they will not. The person or
persons in the stereography role decides (or is closely involved in deciding)
what is “good 3D” for the show.
On set or location, the person(s) in the stereography role translates creative
objectives into practical options. In postproduction he or she determines
which imagery has issues, how to correct the issue, and helps the creative
evaluate the technical quality of corrections. They may also help explain to
the creative team various technical methods and resource requirements for
achieving creative intentions such as emotion, pacing and suspense. If you
do not have stereography expertise on the show from the start, then it is up
to the managing team to acquire it.
The best performers in the stereography role are also diplomats. Their role
spans both creative and technical realms. They realize that their function
