an “edge violation.” We discuss edge violations and their solutions in
greater detail in Chapter 5 Depth. The important thing to know for now
is that in 3D it matters where your area of interest is placed relative to
the side edges of the frame. Generally it is better to have your subject or
area of interest in the center between L and R edges of the frame.
Determining the area of interest in a frame and where the area of interest
plays in Z-space over time are creative decisions rather than technical ones.
Depth decisions made on set during image capture can in most cases be
modii ed in post by moving L and R horizontally toward or away from
each other. We will learn how 3D post teams creatively adjust or grade the
apparent location of the area of interest in Z-Space (a process called depth
grading ) in Chapter 5.
1.8 “Good 3D”
As a 3D team member, it's extremely helpful to have an understanding of
“good 3D.” The dei nition of good 3D is going to change with every show.
