APPENDIX
Metadata
Quick Tips
1. 3D shows generate massive quantities of metadata and image data.
2. Metadata is an asset and part of your show's intellectual property.
Metadata is metacontent.
3. Your show has a different metadata requirement than any other show.
4. A metadata workl ow plan can greatly reduce your show's schedule,
budget, resource and technical risks.
5. Finding a post provider who speaks your show's metadata language can
be challenging.
Overview
Metadata can be a major or a minor part of some 3D shows. The purpose
of this Appendix section is to:
• Describe the relationship between metadata and 3D post workl ows
• Provide examples of 3D metadata and various scenarios showing how 3D
teams now use metadata
• Introduce a limited number of working dei nitions for 3D metadata-related
terms.
• Provide a starting point for working with post providers to discover
optimum metadata workl ow for your specii c show.
• Provide a current look at state-of-the art metadata tools.
What is Metadata?
The instant a photon hits a sensor in a digital imaging system, including
3D systems, a torrent of data becomes potentially available to your creative
and technical team. Your show generates image data and metadata . In the
context of 3D post, a working dei nition of metadata is “data about image
data.” Image data is the twin of metadata. In modern digital production,
there is always one with the other. The metadata workl ow gets inputs from
all other 3D post processes/workl ows and exports data and information
to all other workl ows in a modern digital 3D stereoscopic production.
