In-Depth Information
Standard 2D visual effects jargon for computer-generated imagery is “3D,”
as in, “Our team delivered a 3D spaceship for our sci-i show.” In this
context, “3D” describes CG objects, characters and environments that, when
composited, appear to viewers to exist within the world of the live action
imagery. We use the term “CG” to refer to computer-generated objects,
characters, and environments within a 3D scene. We will use “visual effects”
to refer to the art and science of creating CG.
Visual effects shots and sequences are likely to be among the most
expensive per second in 2D as well as in 3D. Most independent i lmmakers
and producers need to squeeze the most production value from the
resources available. If you can resolve an issue in the other workl ows,
do that i rst. Only when issues cannot be resolved in other workl ows
should shots enter the visual effects workl ow. Visual effects work can
address a single element in a 3D shot or it can address the entire shot.
For shows using both “natively captured” and 2D-to-3D conversion,
conversion can be considered a kind of visual effect because it involves
creating a view (L and/or R) not captured using standard photographic
techniques.
7.2 Types of Visual Effects Work
As with depth, geometry and color workl ows, the 3D Visual Effects workl ow
has both technical corrective as well as a creative aspect. Of course, all
activities in all workl ows share corrective and creative aspects. But this
distinction may help you determine what you need for your 3D show in
terms of visual effects.
Just as in 2D, corrective visual effects in 3D involves removing or obscuring
undesirable portions of live action shots so as to not create story discontinuity
in viewers. Corrective work can be planned (removing a rig in a stunt) or
unplanned, unanticipated “i x-it” shots. In some cases, corrective work can
also involve replacing portions of live action imagery with other live action
imagery or CG.
As with 2D visual effects, creative 3D visual effects work includes:
• Creating CG objects, characters and environments (modeling, rigging,
animating, lighting)
• Enhancing live action elements (e.g., skydomes, set extensions, matte
paintings)
• Graphics
