5.4.5 Visual Effects
Visual effects (computer-generated imagery: characters, objects and
environments) depth must link visually with live-action depth work. So it
is important for Visual Effects teams to be aware of the depth settings of the
live action sequences into which their work will be integrated. For shows that
elect to record on-set 3D metadata—typically, focus, iris, zoom, convergence
angle and interaxial distance shot metadata will travel with footage to the
visual effects team.
“Depth balancing—handing off depth from shot to shot—is critical
because it helps the action of the show move forward. The goal is
to have the thing you are converged on at the end of Shot A be
the same place you are converged on at the beginning of Shot B.”
