4.6.3 Tools
If you have the opportunity to specify tools for the show, do not get lulled
into thinking that just because depth and geometry tools are part of an
editing package that depth and geometry are mere adjuncts to editorial.
Do not allow your choice of editing system to dei ne your geometry toolset.
If possible, it is better to choose your geometry and depth tools i rst by testing
each candidate system to make sure it i ts your show's requirements. Tools
in the geometry workl ow can be categorized as:
• Image Analysis Systems
• Geometry Correction Systems
• Plug-Ins
Chapter 9 3D Post Tools Directory contains a listing of tools for the geometry
workl ow.
4.6.3.1 Image Analysis Systems
Some geometry correction tools perform image analysis on image pairs and
make changes to geometry based on a software comparison of L and R.
Image analysis systems (or subsystems) are hardware and software tools that
calculate the disparity and mismatches between L and R and display the
results. The results of this analysis can, assist teams in spotting, classifying,
resolving, or otherwise addressing the most many common geometry issues.
Some tools have the ability to correct geometry based on image analysis.
Neither the manual (identii cation only) nor the semi-automated (identify
and resolve) geometry tools are inherently superior. If your show needs
automated functionality, then get it. If it does not, then don't. Verify by running
tests. For a three-minute music video on a leisurely post schedule, manual
geometry adjustments might work i ne. A show dealing with imagery from
various sources made by people with different experience and expertise levels
under a tight schedule might i nd semi-automated geometry functionality
worthwhile, especially when it helps the team prepare more quickly for
creative work like editorial, depth, and color.
4.6.3.2 Geometry Correction Systems
Hardware/software tools that enable teams to modify shot geometry to
resolve geometry issues, in some cases, are based on the results of image
analysis. Some tools can evaluate 3D footage and spot the actual or potential
issue and make the i x. Other tools identify issues but leave it to the human
