wishing to select 3D editing software for their show downloads trial versions
of possible solutions. Then they run sample footage at the same specs as
those proposed for the show to evaluate if the various systems perform as
claimed in the product literature. Even if this feasibility test succeeds, you
still need to demonstrate that the tool or technique operates as expected
under workloads anticipated by the production/show.
For example, a conform system that can easily handle a trickle of imagery
may react differently to the cataract of imagery typical to most productions.
A realistic stress test could help teams determine that an alternate solution
might work better for your show. Stereography expertise would be especially
valuable during these tests. There are no hard-and-fast rules. If you have the
time, I encourage you to experiment with (i.e., test) various editorial tools
and techniques so you can determine which tools are best suited to your
editing style.
