3.6.3.4 Utilities
Utilities are standalone solutions for playing back and/or processing specii c
types  of 3D source material in multiple workl ows. One kind of utility
(examples include Stereoscopic Player and Bino) enables quick playback
of 3D imagery without having to open an editing system. Another kind of
utility (examples include RED Cine-X Pro) helps prepare certain kinds of
digital i les for postproduction.
3.6.3.5 Other Tools
In some cases editing software also contains conform, depth, geometry and
color tools. Some systems offer some form of automated geometry correction,
L/R color balancing and depth grading. If you are considering these tools
for your show, I recommend you test them to make sure the tool provides
the capabilities your show needs. Editorial tools can cover any of six process
areas:
• input/output
• calibration
• monitoring/reviewing
• correction/grading
• analysis
• quality control
Consumer vs. Prosumer vs. Professional
Please note that the terms “consumer,” “prosumer” and “professional” refer
to the relative price of the tool and do not indicate the skill or expertise of the
tool's user. Using an expensive “professional” imaging system does not make
one a professional, nor does using a “consumer” editing system guarantee
sub-standard 3D imagery or audience experience. Many 3D productions acquire
3D imagery using a mixture of consumer and prosumer cameras in addition to
professional cameras. A similar approach also goes for editorial tools. Avid is
not necessarily a more professional 3D editing system than Grass Valley's Edius
or Final Cut Pro with a 3D plug-in. It really depends on what your resources are
and what you are trying to accomplish.
