■ The organization might need to rethink how to organize its tools, use its techniques,
and procure and access its data sources. This is where the actual work lies, because it
essentially requires reinventing or adapting old narratives to new ones.
Embodying this new culture involves establishing, affirming, and keeping the new
changes. For large organizations, replacing old tools and techniques with new cloud-based
ones can be a huge challenge. This is not only because of the culture that evolved along
with using these tools and techniques but also because of the revenue stream that the com-
pany depends upon.
Figure 13.2 shows models for adapting changes to organizational tools, techniques, and
resources. The first model is the standard model, which builds on the shared assumptions
and present knowledge of an organization. Change is viewed as an external or alien entity
until the organization goes through learning, teaching, and training exercises to incorporate
the change. This model may have a disadvantage in moving slowly toward the goal of change
adaption, but it promises the greatest stability in uncertain situations.

Standard Proactive Reactive

The proactive adaption model applies to organizations that have already perfected and
matured their procedures. It starts with a stable working state with occasional or scheduled
improvements. Once the improvements have been executed and affirmed, new levels of
standards are set. These new standards now serve as the benchmarks and entry points for
new changes. This, in return, maintains and reinforces stability.
The reactive model applies to organizations that have instability in their work processes
and need to incorporate fixes rather than changes. Once the fixes are executed, reactivity
continues to find new issues to fix.
