CREATING THE PROJECT SCHEDULE
To create the project schedule, the project manager should begin by listing each deliverable that
has been identified in the project requirements as well as the person or resource responsible for
completing that deliverable. Martin and Tate (1997) suggest using Post-it ® Notes to identify each
deliverable on the schedule and placing them onto a large poster-size sheet of paper (fig. 2-3).
(There are several computer scheduling programs that can be used as well.) Once you've placed
all the deliverables in logical sequence, you can connect related deliverables to create a network
(flow) diagram. Deliverables that are required to be completed prior to the start of another de-
liverable should have a line with an arrow connecting them, showing the “before” and “after”
relationship (fig. 2-4).

project schedule begins with
identifying the various tasks
and actions needed.

in a logical sequence; some
tasks feed into more than one
task.
