out an ecological restoration project. The framework and tools we have provided should aid you
in achieving a successful restoration project.
Project Planning and Management Principles
The following summarized principles will assist in your recall of the planning steps. This list can
also be of help when educating your stakeholders, team members, supervisors, or funding organi-
zations. Adhering to these restoration project planning and management principles is the key to
achieving a successful restoration project, on time and within budget.

Prepare a plan and go through a planning and design process tailored to the needs of
your project.
The overall process of developing a restoration project involves proceeding through four phases,
the first two of which are planning and design. Within each phase, you will need to proceed
through a series of steps before you arrive at a well-conceived project to achieve your stakeholders'
vision of a restored site. Simultaneously, you will be evaluating the application of one or both
strategies, management and construction/installation, for implementing your project.

Engage all stakeholders and interested parties in your planning process from the
beginning.
The involvement of all stakeholders in the project planning and design phases is critical to the
long-term success of your project. The term stakeholders includes not only the project sponsors
but also those who will benefit from your project as well as those who might otherwise be affected
