FIGURE 14-8. Cleared of eucalypts, this site was planted with container-grown willows, cottonwoods, and
sycamores. Water was returned to the original streambed following completion of planting. Photograph

Control measures included hand pulling and a limited application of herbicides in more concen-
trated population areas.
Annual evaluations were conducted based on the field monitoring reports. These evaluations
were done to assess trends in site conditions and were used as a basis for remedial action. Replace-
ment plants were installed in areas where mortality exceeded expectations. Experience from sev-
eral prior projects, in similar habitat and region, formed the basis of our expectations. The project
plant survival numbers were compared with the success criteria from previous projects. Although
mortality and vandalism created some challenges, the project was very successful overall. The
plantings performed extremely well with mortality not exceeding 5 percent, well within our antic-
ipated mortality range of 20 percent.
