Chapter 14
Bring It All Together
In this chapter we bring all of the previous
discussions together, walking you through
the major steps in the restoration planning
and design process (fig. 14-1). We have in-
cluded several sample documents from one
of our completed restoration projects. These
are excerpts from the project file, with notes
attached for clarification. Where the plan
sheets were too large, we have included only
a portion of the plan sheet to demonstrate a
technique or to point out a specific feature.
Project Background: Los Peñasquitos
Canyon Preserve
In the early 1990s, two of the authors, then
working for the California Department of
Transportation (Caltrans), developed a bio-
logical mitigation plan for a nearby freeway
project. The mitigation requirements called
for the creation of three acres of southern
willow scrub vegetation. As the project
sponsor, Caltrans was obligated to perform
the mitigation. The authors developed a
restoration project to satisfy the mitigation
plan set forth by the regulatory agencies. A
