Off-road vehicles can be successfully controlled using these specially designed devices (fig. 10-14).
Some urban restoration project designers have incorporated lighting into associated recreational
features, such as along trails; however, one should be aware that lighting can significantly affect
the use of the site by wildlife.
In more heavily urban areas, fencing may not be enough to protect the site from all forms of
harm. The Mission Trails project had a security guard on duty during the daylight hours; while
costly, the project was large enough and the consequences of failure (financial and public works
schedule) important enough that it was considered a prudent action. During the year that the se-
curity guard controlled access, vandalism was kept to a minimum. We feel that the success of that
project is due to this measure, albeit one unusual for a restoration project.
Documentation of As-Built Conditions
After a restoration project has been installed and all construction work has been completed, it is
very important to prepare as-built plans (chapter 9). These plans are valuable because sometimes
there are significant variations from what was specified on the original plans, for example, in the
