restoration sites. The clamping foot grips the plant stem, and then a long handle (top of photo) is pulled
back using the foot as a fulcrum uprooting the plant. (Photo by Mary F. Platter-Rieger.)
District, in Fresno, California, and subsequently reinvented as the “waterjet stinger” described in
detail by the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (Hoag et al. 2001). An example of a
piece of equipment designed for use in difficult situations is “the “stinger” (Hoag and Ogle 2008),
which attaches to the end of a backhoe arm and is used to plant hardwood cuttings in existing
riprap.
Kloetzel (2004) provides information on the availability and applicability of a variety of hand
and power tools used at ecological restoration project sites. Two relatively new pieces of equip-
ment, designed to mount on the arm of an excavator, include the expandable stinger and the
Hy-Gro Tiller™, which are used for performing spot cultivation in preparation for hand planting.
Your choice of the specific tools or equipment to implement your project takes some informed
