of your core project team, then minimal specifications will likely be needed. At a minimum, a
plant summary should be compiled to ensure that all materials will be available (appendix 7).
However, if you involve tradespeople and establish contractual relationships for certain tasks to
be completed, then not only will specifications be required but also contract provisions. If you
anticipate contracting out all, or a portion of, the project work, then involving an attorney who
specializes in developing and reviewing contracts may be prudent.
All of your effort on good design and thorough research can be lost to poorly written specifi-
cations. It is not a wise course to anticipate that specific individuals will be installing your project
or tasks, because unexpected events happen. Successful project managers make effective use of
