tablished goals and objectives for the site, the budget, evaluation criteria as established by various
stakeholders, and requirements established by permitting agencies or granting organizations (fig.
6-4). These factors have a relationship with one another and, depending on the results of your site
analysis and other data, will require a response in the design of the project.
Design Elements
The following list of design elements is presented as steps. Each step involves more specific issues
and builds on the previous step. As mentioned earlier, this is an iterative process and a response to
one factor may require an adjustment or reconsideration of a prior decision. Much of the informa-
tion you will need for these elements should be evident from the reference sites or can be incor-
porated in the reference model prepared from reference site information. The seven elements of
restorative design are as follows:
• Water body/hydrologic modification
• Land modification
• Vegetation community
• Species palette
• Vegetation patterns
• Species quantities
• Habitat features
