will take a new role. As the comparison of the affordances shows, paper
maps till nowadays have been designed to give overview, orientation and
information, the latter as precise and complete as possible, the affordance
of giving information could probably be better fulfilled by electronic net-
worked devices. Hence, one can think about whether the design of present
city maps for instance is overloaded for such a scenario. The use of the
Anoto pattern implies a reduction in content on the printed map. It has to
be examined whether this even has a positive influence on the ability to get
orientation from the map with some users. When learning more about how
users interact with paper maps and digital devices one will come to more
conclusions about how paper maps and digital applications need to be
designed for the two to work ideally together and complement each other.
