In-Depth Information
The underground powerhouse with a length of approx. 90 m has a maximum height of
37.5 m, a width of 20 m and is equipped with four units providing a total capacity of
406 MW. The two pressure shafts between the upper reservoir and the cavern have an
internal diameter of 3.5 m, are steel-lined and are inclined at approx. 45° (Fig. 22.5).
The discharge capacity of both shafts is 125 m3/s. The shafts were excavated by a tunnel
boring machine. The axis of the cavern runs perpendicular to the axes of the shafts
minimizing their lengths (Figs. 22.3 and 22.4).
In the following, the design and construction of the cavern will be described to a large
extent in accordance with earlier publications (Wittke & Soria 1983, Soria & Wittke
1985, Wittke 1990).
