Figure 16.30 Construction pit, horizontal section, measured horizontal displacements (Wittke 1990)
The wall displacements due to excavation of the construction pit were interpreted with
respect to the in-situ stress state and the rock mechanical parameters by means of pseu-
do-three-dimensional analyses using the program FEST03 (Section 10.7.1). As a re-
sult, the magnitude of the horizontal displacements could only be explained assuming
an increased horizontal in-situ stress
Δσ H . This stress is a result of high overburden
pressure due to sedimentation and subsequent unloading due to erosion (Section 9.4).
According to statements from geologists, the preloading of the diagenetic consolidated
claystones of the Lias
α
in the area of Stuttgart could have corresponded to several
hundred meters.
