The dam site is located near the Rhine rift and is characterized by fold tectonics,
the structure of which indicates that the maximum tectonic stress component is ori-
ented in NW-SE direction (Schetelig 1991). This prediction has been approximately
confirmed by the interpretation of the stress measurements mentioned before, using
triaxial cells (Kiehl 1991b).
A systematic method for the determination of the large-scale in-situ stress state from
local stress measurements is the so-called “global stress interpretation model” proposed
