The value of Poisson's ratio
of the rock mass which appears in (15.1) must be esti-
mated and therefore cannot be determined. Poisson ratios adopted from laboratory
tests are often assumed for evaluation. Although the rock mass may not have the same
Poisson's ratio as the intact rock, this assumption is reasonable since the influence of
Poisson's ratio on the evaluated modulus is limited because the possible numerical vari-
ation of rock mass Poisson's ratios is small.
