Swelling
Swelling tests with confined lateral strain
Swelling tests with confined lateral strain are normally conducted on cylindrical specimens
with a height-to-diameter ratio H:D ranging from 1:2 to 1:3.5 prepared from drill cores
recovered using air flushing or a drilling fluid containing an anti-swelling additive. Spec-
imen heights of 20 - 30 mm and specimen diameters of 50  - 100 mm are recommended
(ISRM 1989a, ISRM 1999b). Frequently used specimen dimensions are H = 20 mm
and D  = 70  mm (DGEG 1986). The preparation of specimens is carried out as de-
scribed in Section 14.4.1.
