Figure 13.12 shows the comparison of an optical scan of a borehole wall with a con-
ventional core obtained from the same depth located in shell limestone (cf. Section 12.5,
Fig. 12.7). This indicates a significantly different degree of separation of the rock mass
as is shown by means of evaluated RQD values of both the pseudo-core and the con-
ventional core (Sommer 2009). In addition to the degree of separation, optical borehole
scans allow us to estimate spacing and apertures of discontinuities (Darilek 1986, Over-
bey et al. 1988, Palmer & Sparks 1991, Felfer 2006).
