Buckling may also take place in the roof of a cavern when the rock mass is subjected
to large horizontal stress (Stille et al. 1981). Fig. 11.34 shows further examples for the
buckling of rock layers at the surface of a slope and the invert of a construction pit
(Wittke & Erichsen 2002). In such cases (11.105) can be used to estimate the safety of
rock layers against buckling.
