Timeline
1700s
The London art scene blossoms, thanks to William Hogarth (paints real-
istic slices of English life), Sir Joshua Reynolds (embraces a “Grand Man-
ner” of juxtaposing Londoners with classical settings), Thomas Gainsbor-
ough (depicts women as the feminine ideal), and others.
1700
London's population is 500,000 and growing fast. One in seven Brits lives
in London.
1702
London's first daily newspapers hit the streets.
1714
The German Hanover family takes over the throne. While the first five
Hanovers—Georges I-IV and William IV—are less than stellar monarchs,
the sixth (Queen Victoria) redeems the clan.
1741
David Garrick takes the London stage. This actor and theater manager's
naturalism on the stage—and business sense off it—greatly enhances the
blossoming theater scene.
