In-Depth Information
By Taxi: A local cabbie named Brian will take you between Salisbury and Stone-
henge, including an hour at the site ( £ 40-50, 4 people max, best to reserve, contact for
exact price, entry fee not included). He also offers a three-hour Stonehenge visit, which
includes Old Sarum, Woodhenge, Durrington Walls, and Woodford's thatched cottages
( £ 80, entry fee not included), and an Avebury and Stonehenge tour ( £ 120-130, entry not
included; tel. 07954/382-792, briantwort@ntlworld.com ).
By Car: Stonehenge is well-signed just off the A-303, about 15 minutes north of
Salisbury, an hour south of Bath, an hour east of Glastonbury, and an hour south of Ave-
bury.
Stonehenge is about 70 miles and 1.5 hours west of London Heathrow (barring
traffic). From the M-25 ring road, connect with the M-3 toward Southampton. Past Bas-
ingstoke, exit to the A-303. Continue west past Andover to Amesbury. In 3.5 miles, turn
onto northbound A-360 at the roundabout, and follow “From Salisbury” directions from
that point (see below).
From Salisbury, head north on A-360 (at the St. Paul's roundabout, take the second
exit, direction: Devizes). Continue for eight miles, crossing the A-303 roundabout. In one
more mile you'll encounter another roundabout; follow it around to the exit for the visit-
ors center.
Orientation to Stonehenge
Cost: £ 14.90, save £ 1 and guarantee entry by pre-booking online, covered by English Her-
itage Pass (see here ) , includes shuttle-bus ride to the stone circle. In summer, there's a
£ 5 refundable parking fee for drivers.
Advance Tickets: Pre-booking a timed-entry ticket online at least 24 hours in advance
is strongly recommended, and the only way to assure you'll actually get in to the
site, which caps the number of visitors per day at 7,000. (Some same-day tickets may
be available at the ticket window, but in high season, it's risky to count on this.)
Purchase your ticket online at www.english-heritage.org.uk/stonehenge . After book-
ing a 30-minute arrival window, you'll receive a confirmation email with your e-tick-
et. Either print your ticket to present at the site, or bring your confirmation number.
If tickets are sold out for the day you planned to visit, you could consider a guided
tour that includes entry (see various options under “Getting to Stonehenge,” earlier).
Hours: Daily June-Aug 9:00-20:00, mid-March-May and Sept-mid-Oct 9:30-19:00, mid-
Oct-mid-March 9:30-17:00. Note that last entry is two hours before closing. Expect
shorter hours and possible closures June 20-22 due to huge, raucous solstice crowds.
