In-Depth Information
Of Britain's many university towns, Cambridge (an hour north of London by train)
is one of the best known—and, for travelers, simply the best. Combining a mellow, fun-
to-explore townscape with a big-league university that churns out famous grads (from
Charles Darwin to Isaac Newton), Cambridge delights.
Stonehenge, the world's most famous rock group, sits lonesome yet adored in a mys-
terious field 90 miles southwest of London. Though some consider it overrated, for others,
this intricately arranged ring of boulders is a must-see.
Although these three destinations are my top picks, London's convenient public trans-
it can easily whisk you to a wealth of day-trip destinations not covered in this topic: Bath
(Roman ruins and Georgian townhouses), Canterbury (cathedral), Dover (castle-crowned
chalk cliffs), Portsmouth (treasure trove of maritime history), Stratford-upon-Avon (all
things Shakespeare), Warwick (fine medieval castle), Oxford (another classic university
town), and Brighton (beach and pier). For details, see Rick Steves England .
