Notting Hill and Nearby
The Notting Hill neighborhood, just west of Bayswater (spreading out from the northwest
tip of Kensington Gardens) is famous for two things: It's the site of the colorful Portobello
Road Market (see here of the Shopping in London chapter), and the setting of the 1999
Hugh Grant/Julia Roberts film of the same name. While the neighborhood is now a bit
more upscale and less funky than the one seen in that film, it's still a pleasant place to stay.
$$$ Portobello Hotel is on a quiet, residential street in the heart of Notting Hill. Its 21
freshly refurbished rooms are funky yet elegant. Prices vary greatly with the season and
size of the room (Sb- £ 140-175, “Good” Db- £ 175-240, “Better” Db- £ 195-245, “Great”
