In-Depth Information
To catch a boat (slower but very scenic), return to Cabot Square, turn right, and walk
five minutes along West India Avenue to the round Westferry Circus park; the Thames
Clippers dock is just beyond (see “Orientation” at the top of this chapter).
Visiting Greenwich or Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park: Catch a DLR train south to
Greenwich or north to the Olympic Park.
Riding the Emirates Air Line Gondola: The much-hyped aerial gondola makes a
pointless trip across the Thames between the O2 dome and what has to be London's least-
interesting district. There's not much to see from here, but the ride itself is a thrill, reas-
onably priced, and easily tacked on to a day of Docklands sightseeing.
To reach the gondola, take the Jubilee Line from Canary Wharf one stop to North
Greenwich Pier. Above ground, follow signs to Air Emirates (about 5 minutes away). The
ride costs £3.20 with an Oyster card (otherwise £4.40); you can head right to the turn-
stiles if you have enough credit on your Oyster card. The gondola ride itself is a 10-minute
dangle 300 feet above the Thames that lands you at the Royal Docks station.
From there it's a two-minute walk to the Royal Victoria DLR station; ride one stop
(on either line) to Canning Town. From Canning Town, you can hop a Bank-bound train
back to central London.
