West India Quay
This row of 19th-century brown-brick warehouses typifies today's Docklands. Standing
side by side are elements of the old Docklands (the warehouses, canal, a few barges) and
the new (the esplanade of umbrella-shaded restaurants, the futuristic Marriott skyscraper).
Back in the 19th century, the water originally lapped up right against those buildings. You
can still see the rustic gates to the lofts. Imagine heavily laden cargo boats off-loading
there.
