Stand in the square and take it all in. You're surrounded by towering skyscrapers, three
glitzy shopping malls, lively cafés, and hurried businesspeople.
Standing in this busy square, it can seem like continual rush hour—with the young
high-tech workforce coursing through the battery of turnstiles. Flash back 200 years, to
this area's heyday as a shipping harbor. “Canary Wharf”—the name for the whole neigh-
borhood—is a reminder of the trading connection London had with distant ports such as
the Canary Islands, off the western coast of Africa. Where sailors once drank grog while
stevedores unloaded cargo, today thousands of office workers (the stevedores of the In-
formation Age) populate a forest of skyscrapers, towering high above the remnants of the
Industrial Age.
