In-Depth Information
Up the steps at the end of the room, along the wall of the upper hall, is a portrait
of the family of King George I. On the right is the artist who spent 19 years of his life
painting this hall, James Thornhill (he finally finished it in 1727). He's holding out his
hand—reportedly, he didn't feel he was paid enough for this Sistine-sized undertaking.
