later, under “Markets”). Marks & Spencer Simply Food sells ready-made lunches
(between the DLR station and the Cutty Sark at 55 Greenwich Church Street).
Pub Grub: Greenwich has almost 100 pubs, with some boasting that they're mere mil-
liseconds from the prime meridian. Meantime The Old Brewery, in the Discover
Greenwich center, is a gastropub decorated with all things beer. An adjacent café
serves cheap lunches. A brewery on this site once provided the daily ration of four
pints of beer for pensioners at the hospital. Today it's a microbrewery offering 50 dif-
ferent beers, while a beer sommelier suggests the right pairings with food on the menu
( £ 4 bar snacks, £ 12 lunches, at night part of the pub becomes a fancier restaurant with
£ 5-10 starters and £ 10-17 main courses; daily 10:00-23:00, lunch 12:00-17:00, dinner
from 18:00, tel. 020/3327-1280).
The Trafalgar Tavern, with a casual pub and elegant ground-floor dining room,
is a historical place for an overpriced meal ( £ 15-22 main courses in restaurant, food
served Mon-Sat 12:00-22:00, Sun 12:00-16:00, Park Row, tel. 020/8858-2909).
Markets: Thanks to its markets, Greenwich throbs with browsing Londoners on week-
ends. The Greenwich Market is an entertaining mini-Covent Garden, located in
the middle of the block between the Cutty Sark DLR station and the Old Royal
Naval College—right on your way to the sights (farmers market, arts and crafts,
and food stands; open Tue-Sun 10:00-17:30, closed Mon; antiques-only on Thu,
www.greenwichmarketlondon.com ) .
The Clocktower Market sells old odds and ends at high prices on Greenwich
High Road, near the post office (Sat-Sun and bank holidays only 10:00-17:00,
www.clocktowermarket.co.uk ) .
Exploring Back Streets: Allow time to browse the town. Wander beyond the touristy
Church Street and Greenwich High Road to where flower stands spill onto the side
streets and antique shops sell brass nautical knickknacks. King William Walk, College
Approach, Nelson Road, and Turnpin Lane (all in the vicinity of Greenwich Market)
are all worth a look.
Length of This Tour: Allow about two hours simply to stroll the area and enjoy the parks,
but add several hours more to enter the sights (figure about an hour for the Cutty Sark,
30 minutes for the Royal Naval College, and an hour or two apiece for the National
Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory).
Starring: Glorious parks and stately buildings, maritime history, and the prime meridian.
