Boar and Bear Hunt Tapestry (c. 1425-1430)
Though most medieval art depicted the Madonna and saints, this colorful wool
tapestry—woven in Belgium—provides a secular slice of life.
“Read” it from right to left: The nobles want to go hunting, so they hire some profes-
sional guides. One pro (in red) enters with his dogs and hunting horn, leading two nobles.
His colleague (above) rousts bear cubs from their den, so the mama and papa bears can be
flushed out into the open. Men and dogs (in the center) surround a bear, while another is
lanced by a nobleman on horseback. Below, well-dressed ladies look on.
