Buses are covered by Travelcards and Oyster cards, and you must have one of these
to ride; there are no individual per-ride tickets available for buses. Any bus ride in down-
town London costs £ 1.45 (with a cap of £ 4.40 per day).
The first step in mastering London's bus system is learning how to decipher the bus-
stop signs found at major transfer points. For an example, see the accompanying photo,
which shows a typical sign you might find at a bus stop. The sign lists the various buses
that service that neighborhood and the destinations they go to. In the first column, find
your destination on the list—e.g., to Paddington Tube/rail station. In the next column, find
a bus that goes there—the #23 (routes marked “N” are night-only). In the final column,
a letter within a circle (e.g., “H”) tells you exactly which nearby bus stop is yours. After
checking the accompanying bus-stop map, make your way to that stop—you'll know it's
yours because it will have the same letter on its pole—and wait for the bus with your num-
