Dale Chihuly Chandelier
This modern chandelier/sculpture by the American glass artist epitomizes the spirit of the
V&A's collection—beautiful manufactured objects that demonstrate technical skill and in-
novation, wedding the old with the new, and blurring the line between arts and crafts.
Each blue-and-yellow strand of the chandelier is tied with a wire to a central spine.
When the chandelier first went up in 2001, Chihuly said, “Too small,” had it disassembled,
and fired up still more glass bubbles.
Dale Chihuly (b. 1941)—face-famous for the eye-patch he's worn since a car acci-
dent—studied glassmaking in Venice, then set up his own studio/factory in Seattle, mak-
ing art as the director of a creative team. He makes an old medium seem fresh and mod-
ern...and the V&A keeps his chandelier looking fresh with a long feather duster.
