Cost: Free (but £ 4 donations appreciated); fee for special exhibits.
Hours: Daily 10:00-18:00, Fri-Sat until 22:00, last entry to special exhibits 45 minutes be-
fore closing.
When to Go: This popular place is especially crowded on weekend days (crowds thin out
on Fri and Sat evenings).
Getting There: Located on the South Bank of the Thames, across from St. Paul's and near
the Globe Theatre. You can get here by Tube, ferry, or foot:
By Tube: Take the Tube to Southwark, London Bridge, St. Paul's, or Mansion
House; then walk 10-15 minutes. See the Bankside Walk chapter.
By Ferry: Catch Thames Clippers' Tate Boat ferry from the Tate Britain ( £ 6.50
one-way, £ 15 day ticket, discount with Travelcard or Oyster card, buy ticket at gallery
desk or on board, departs every 40 minutes from 9:55 to 17:00, about 15 minutes,

On Foot: Walk across the Millennium Bridge from St. Paul's Cathedral.
Information: The two lowest floors (levels 0 and 1) have the basic services: info desks,
baggage check, bookstores, videoguide rentals, and tickets for temporary exhibits.
The helpful staff at the info desk (level 1) can tell you the location of specific
works. The floor plan (suggested £ 1 donation) is also useful. In addition, several
touch-screen computers are scattered throughout the museum. Tel. 020/7887-8888,

Tours: The £ 4 interactive videoguide covers the entire permanent collection, and includes
a tour geared for kids ages 8-12. Free 45-minute guided tours are offered at 11:00,
12:00, 14:00, and 15:00 (see info desk for details).
Length of This Tour: Allow at least an hour. Read this chapter ahead of time, then browse
according to your tastes.
Cloakroom: Level 0 (free, £ 2 suggested donation).
Photography: Photos are only permitted in the entrance hall.
