A diamond-shaped plaque on the floor honors the guards (“St. Paul's Watch”) who
worked so valiantly from 1939 until 1945 to save the church from WWII destruction. On
the wall next to the door a dirty panel of stone remains, reminding visitors how dark the
entire church was before undergoing a recent huge cleaning in preparation for the 300th
anniversary of the first service held in the church. Remarkably, this is the first great church
completed in the lifetime of its architect (built 1675-1710).
Glance up and behind. The organ trumpets say, “Come to the evensong and hear us
