Tours: Free 30-minute eyeOpener tours are led by volunteers, who focus on select rooms
(daily 11:00-15:45, generally every 15 minutes). Free 45-minute gallery talks on spe-
cific subjects are offered Tue-Sat at 13:15; a free 20-minute highlights tour is avail-
able on Friday evening.
The £ 5 multimedia guide offers dial-up audio commentary and video on 200 ob-
jects, as well as several theme tours (for example, 1.5-hour highlights tour or Parthen-
on sculptures tour). They're substantial and cerebral (must leave photo ID). There's
also a fun children's multimedia guide ( £ 3.50). You can download this chapter as a
free Rick Steves audio tour (see here ) .
Length of This Tour: Allow at least two hours. If you have less time, be sure to see the
Parthenon Galleries ( ); you can skip the long upstairs detour to the mummies ( )
and go quickly through the Assyrian collection ( - ).
Cloakroom: £ 1.50 per item. You can carry a daypack in the galleries, but big backpacks
must be checked.
Photography: Photos allowed without flash or tripod (but photos prohibited in the tem-
porary exhibits).
Eateries: You have three choices inside the complex. The self-service Court Café ( £ 4-5
sandwiches and salads) is in the Great Court ground floor. The pricier Court Restaur-
ant ( £ 15-18 entrées) is on the upper level atop the Reading Room. The cafeteria-style
