Edward VI (1537-1553)
Nine-year-old Edward (son of Henry's third wife, Jane Seymour) ruled for only six years
before dying young, leaving England in religious and economic turmoil. (View the optical
illusion through the hole at the right end to put the enigmatic boy king into perspective.)

Elizabeth I (1533-1603) in Three Different Portraits
Elizabeth I was pale, stern-looking, red-haired (like her father, Henry VIII), and wore big-
shouldered power dresses. During her reign, she kept Protestant/Catholic animosity under
control and made England a naval power and cultural capital. Find three different portraits
that span her life. The one with the most elaborate frame with a crown on the top shows
her coronation at age 26, with the crown, scepter, and orb. At age 42 (see photo), she ex-
udes a regal bearing. The largest painting (The Ditchley Portrait) captures her standing on
a map of England, age 60. She looks ageless, always aware of her public image, resorting
to makeup, dye, wigs, showy dresses, and pearls to dazzle courtiers.
