In-Depth Information
Raphael gives a behind-the-scenes look at this complex leader. On the one hand, the
pope is an imposing pyramid of power, with a velvet shawl, silk shirt, and fancy rings
boasting of wealth and success. But at the same time, he's a bent and broken man, his
throne backed into a corner, with an expression that seems to say, “Is this all there is?”

Bronzino— An Allegory with Venus and Cupid (c.1545)
You may not recognize this painting, but you might recognize a foot. Look closely at the
figure of boy Cupid, on the left. His right foot became famous on TV in the 1970s and
1980s in the comedy show Monty Python's Flying Circus . As the show opened and cir-
cus music played, the credits would come to an end on the last note, with Cupid's giant
foot coming down from above to squash the scene with a flatulent ffft! The Pythons used
collage-style graphics to end sketches abruptly (rather than fumble for a punch line), thus
making a seamless (if surreal) transition to the next bit.

4.
