King's State Apartment: These more lavishly decorated rooms give the best look at
royal life in the palace. After climbing the staircase (with its colorful murals of courtiers
gazing down at you), you enter Room 2, where the king would receive visitors on a raised
throne. The next rooms showcase court life during the palace's heyday in the 1700s—the
salons attended by wits and intellectuals (held in Room 3); the parties, music, and dancing
(in the impressive Room 4); and card games in the drawing room (Room 5). Mannequins
in Room 6 wear clothes of the day—men in ruffled sleeves, ladies in wi-i-ide skirts, and
the elaborate costume of the prestigious Order of the Garter. Room 7 has “Mad” King
George III's red-and-white, velvet-and-ermine coronation robe, with its 10-foot train.
The large Room 8 ends the visit with world-class paintings by Tintoretto (Esther Before
Ahaserus) and Veronese (Adoration of the Kings) .
