DISNEY DISH WITH JIM HILL
FERAL CATS CAUSE IMAGINEERS TO FLEA … ER … FLEE When Dis-
neyland Park was originally being built in late 1954, Walt didn't have enough
money to install an attraction inside of Sleeping Beauty Castle. So the iconic
structure stood empty until the fall of 1956, when the theme park had better
cash flow. But when a design team arrived to begin taking measurements for
thesoon-to-be-built Sleeping Beauty Castle walk-through, theydiscovered that
someone had moved into this structure ahead of Princess Aurora—a family of
feral cats. To make matters worse, the castle was now so badly infested with
fleas from these cats that—after spending just a few minutes inside—the Ima-
gineers wereforcedtoretreat, itching andscratching all theway.Ittookseveral
weeks to capture and then relocate the cats, not to mention thoroughly fumig-
ate the enormous structure, which is why the grand opening of Disneyland's
Sleeping Beauty walk-through was pushed back to late April 1957.
TOURING TIPS The entrance is on the Fantasyland side of the castle near the passageway to
Plaza Gardens and Frontierland. The exhibit allows for one-way traffic only. It can get a
bit crowded inside, but there should rarely be a line outside the attraction. For those guests
unable to handle stairs, a small alcove is to the left of the bridge to Tomorrowland. Inside
you will find a collection of the animations, as well as music, allowing you to experien-
ce the attraction's elements without walking. The viewing location runs on a loop, so you
might have to watch it out of order.
