In-Depth Information
SETTING AND ATMOSPHERE One of a small chain of Islamic Chinese restaurants, this is
the real deal. Mas' Islamic's dining room is spacious, with comfortable booths and large
tables. The decor blends Middle Eastern and Chinese motifs with lots of tile, repetitive
patterned mosaics, and lofty arches.
HOUSE SPECIALTIES Get the thick sesame bread with green onions as a starter. Any lamb
dish is a sure bet, especially the one served with sa cha, a spicy brown sauce.
OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS The warm pots—northern-Chinese stews—are great, as is
the beef with green onions.
SUMMARY AND COMMENTS This is a veritable institution among local Muslims (Arabs
and East and Southeast Asians), so expect to see women in veils and burkas and men
dressed very conservatively; also, note that no alcohol is served. Service is gracious, if
a bit English-challenged. Stick to the northern-Chinese specialties—the more familiar
Chinese side of the menu is less exciting.

SETTING AND ATMOSPHERE This large chain of seafood eateries designs each of its units
differently to match its local surroundings. In addition to lots of dark hardwoods and spa-
cious booths, the decor here takes its cues from the rich agricultural history of the area.
HOUSE SPECIALTIES Fish—fresh and infinitely variable. Each chef is free to choose from
among 80 different preparations, and there's an abundance of fresh selections. You can't
miss with king crab, lobster, fresh salmon, or killer fresh swordfish.
SUMMARY AND COMMENTS This is a very popular spot with local business types, and
waits without reservations can be long. The menu can be overwhelming; on the other
hand, there's something for everyone, even folks who don't eat fish. Happy hour specials
(daily, 3-6 p.m.) somewhat soften the sting of expensive entrées; the $5 steamed mussels
are an especially good deal.
