10. In BD viticulture, special preparations such as 500 and 501 are
sprayed, at very low concentrations, on the foliage or applied to the soil
ostensibly to strengthen the vine's disease resistance or stimulate the soil
biota. When applied to soil, the very low numbers of microorganisms
in these preparations are unlikely to survive in competition with the
overwhelming numbers of native soil microorganisms; hence the
treatment is unlikely to be effective.
11. Precision viticulture provides the tools to determine, at a spatial
resolution of 1 to 2 m, the distribution of any soil nutrient deficiencies,
and other limiting factors such as salinity. These spatial patterns
of variation in soil properties can be matched against geographic
informationsystem-basedmapsofyieldorcanopydensity,acquired
over several seasons, thereby allowing more effective vineyard
management.
